Superdrug B. Clay Face Masks

Anyone who knows me knows I love a good face mask (usually because I post a selfie everytime I use one!) As a teenager I loved picking up a couple of individual sachets for a sleepover and nowadays I love relaxing with one after a long week.

As UK based vegans know, Superdrug are fabulous for reasonably priced, cruelty free and clearly marked vegan options.

A couple of weeks ago I was at Boxpark Shoreditch visiting Superdrug’s vegan pop-up shop and picked up a single use mask and loved it so much I bought a full size version at the weekend. Lucky for me they were on “buy one get one free” so I bought two pots for £6.99!

I especially love clay masks, it’s one of the only thing that can make me lay still. If I have a bath with Epsom salts (which you have to soak in for at least 20 minutes to get the benefit) I am constantly checking my phone to see how many minutes there are before I can get out! But slap a clay mask on me and I’ll happily lay there feeling it drying out until I can’t move my face anymore!

The first mask I’m going to talk about is the B. Purified clay mask. The blurb says –

“Use B. Purified Clay Face Mask for a deep purifying cleanse. It will effectively draw out dirt and impurities and give instant refreshment.

The benefits –

Deeply purifies pores – rich in Kaolin, a natural clay that absorbs impurities, without over drying the skin.

Gives a mattified, clearer complexion – contains a blend of oil absorbing ingredients and eucalyptus extract.”

This mask wasn’t as thick as others I have used, which means there’s many more applications in the pot! It went on really nicely and my skin felt fabulous afterwards.

The other mask I have tried from the range is the B. Detoxed clay mask.

“Use B. Detoxed clay face mask to liven up dull, fatigued skin. It absorbs accumulated dirt and debris and helps to minimise the appearance of blemishes and pore size within four weeks.

The benefits –

Instantly refreshes and brightens. The rich clay formula, combined with detoxifying benefits of charcoal powder draws out built up impurities.

Minimises pore size and blemishes – absorbs excess sebum without over drying the skin and prevents pores from getting clogged.”

No underestimation the is the best face mask I have ever used! (And I have tried a lot!) My skin just felt so clean and soft after using this mask and left me feeling glowing for days afterwards.

After I have worn my mask for 20 minutes I remove it using my reusable pads. I bought these a few years ago and have been using them ever since, they are flannel like pads which you can use for cleansing and makeup removable. Once you’ve used them (there’s quite a few in the pack) all stick them in the bag and put them in the washing machine with the rest of your wash. So much better for the planet than wipes or cotton wool.

There are two other masks in this range B. Glowing and B. Hydrated take a look and see which one is most suitable to your skin needs.

Have you tried any of the Superdrug B. face masks? What did you think? Let me know in the comments below.

Lush Vegan Evening

On Thursday I attended an event at my local Lush store with my Mum. I was really excited when I saw this event pop up on Facebook as my little suburb of London isn’t the most vegan-friendly.

The details on the event page were –

We believe in fresh handmade products and making them using only vegetarian ingredients. It’s a value we’ve always held because it’s important to us, and to our customers.

With around 80% of our products also being Vegan, we’d love to give our customers the opportunity to meet up for some fresh ideas, recipe and knowledge sharing, and also a bit of a pamper. So whether you’re a life long Vegan, brand new to the diet change, or just thinking about adopting a Vegan or Vegetarian lifestyle, we’d love to invite you along.

When we arrived we were given a sticker for our name and how long we’d been vegan or vegetarian. They had a table with some cookbooks and magazines to look at for recipe ideas as well as some vegan refreshment laid out in the way of oreos, fizzy sweets and chocolate.

There was also a game to play or attributing the vegan quote to the correct celebrity (our group did rather well at this!)

We also took the opportunity to have a proper look through all their vegan products and Mum got a sample of their coffee face scrub. We was really nice just having a browse and seeing what they had as I usually just go for the same products when I’m in there.

I wasn’t in need of much so I just bought a bath bomb each for my Husband and me, I was slightly disappointed we weren’t given a discount at this event but that was the only thing I think that would have made it better.

I thought this was a great event for Lush to put on and have been a long time customer of them due to their cruelty free status and ethical campaigns. If they went 100% vegan it would be the icing on the cake!

Have you been to a vegan event a Lush? If not I would ask your local store if they’d consider putting on an event like this.

What are you fave Lush products? Let me know in the comments below.

Vegan Kind Beauty Box 8

Last week I received my quarterly beauty box from The Vegan Kind. For £18.50 including postage and packaging you receive 6-7 skincare/makeup products that are completely free from animal ingredients and are not tested on animals either!

Starting with the top left we have The Konjac Sponge Company Ltd French Pink Clay Facial Puff Sponge  (RRP  £8.99). This looks like a really interesting facial sponge, I’ve eaten konjac before but never used it to wash my face! The Sponge is mineral rich and cleanses, exfoliates and detoxifies skin.

Next there is Vitala Spa Chakra Balancing Compassion Bath and Body Oil 100ml (RRP  £8.50) this smells amazing and is really relaxing in a long, hot soak!

Figs & Rouge evAcalm Perfect Calm Moisture+ AM PM Cream 50ml (RRP  £24) is up next. This goes on the skin lovely and can be used pre makeup in the morning or before you go to bed.

Finishing off the top row is Weleda Almond Sensitive Skin Travel Size Body Wash 20ml (RRP  £1.95) and Hand Cream 10ml (RRP  £2.25) the hand cream is a good size for your handbag and the body wash will go in my overnight bag. I tend not to take my own toiletries when staying with friends or family but then I don’t like using non cruelty-free products so this is great rather than taking full size products.

On the bottom left we have Sheila’s Natural Products Face Cream Deluxe Sample (RRP full size £27.50) this is another nice face cream, so I’ll be in stock for a while.

Lastly we have Spectrum Collections Tapered Finishing Brush (£7.99). This has a feel to it and is really soft!

This box retails in at over £50 (!) So for £18.50 you can’t go wrong. As always 20p from every box goes towards Dr Hadwen Trust which funds research into alternatives to animal testing.

My box this time seems a little cream heavy with no makeup items. It may just be a case of what is available at the time but I feel a bit of planning to get a good cross section of products would be more appealing.

I was also surprised that only the konjac sponge had any markings noting vegan or cruelty free and these were only on the leaflet inside the packet and not on the outside. Nevertheless it is great being introduced to new products and cruelty free companies.

Have you used any of these products? What did you think?

Review – Amie Skincare

20160613_214009

I first came across Amie Skincare when I received their Morning Clear Purifying Facial Wash in my Beauty box from The Vegan Kind which I wrote about here.

As soon as I started using the facial wash I was impressed. It left my skin feeling so smooth and I knew when I had finished I would be straight on their website to but another one!

picq-1465851097535

When I ordered from the website I bought two facial washes which are £4.95 each (one for me and one for my Mum) and I also ordered their Spring Clean Deep Cleansing Mask (£5.95). I tend to use a mask at least once a week to give myself a treat and I really liked this one. It smells of peppermint and left my skin feeling so soft.

picq-1465851137938

I had been using Lush’s Imperialis for my moisturiser but I had to take one pot back as it was bubbling and smelt really funny, I was given their Enzymion as a replacement as the whole batch of Imperialis was off. I used a couple more pots of the Enzymion before I went back to Imperialis, it wasn’t bubbling anymore but it didn’t have the same smell I remember from when I first started using it. As I had been so impressed with my other Amie products I decided to buy a moisturiser from them. They offer two moisturisers, Morning Dew Matte-Finish Moisturiser and Morning Light Hydrating Daily Moisturiser (both £4.95). As I have combination skin I went for the matte-finish one. I have been using it for a few days and I am really happy with the results. I only need a small pea-sized amount to moisturise my whole face.

picq-1465851118446

As I was buying the moisturiser I thought I’d treat myself to the New Leaf Exfoliating Polish (£5.95). This is designed to be used no more than twice a week to give your face a deep cleanse. It contains mango and orange blossom and smells gorgeous when you apply it to your skin. The exfoliating element is rice granules so no nasty microbeads here!

picq-1465851157367

They sell a few other products including an exfoliating daily wash, facial wipes and micellar water along with a mini travel duo of the face wash and moisturiser.

Amie Skincare are proud of their natural credentials and lay it out on their website.

20160613_174655

As I have only bought from the website I have tried to buy at least two products at a time to balance out the delivery charge, although the products are so reasonably priced it isn’t so much of an issue! They are also available at Waitrose and John Lewis in the UK.

I really recommend these products, I can’t believe they work so well for such a reasonable price, you can also read more testimonies on their website.

Have you tried Amie Skincare? What did you think?

Vegan Perfumes

Along with cruelty free beauty products, perfumes are another area where vegans need to tread carefully.

You can look up your fave perfume to see whether they comment about being cruelty free or containing animal ingredients although some are particularly quiet on the matter. Also if the perfume is from a fashion house you may want to consider whether they use animal products in their fashion lines (fur, crocodile/snakeskin, leather, silk, wool).

Luckily there are a few brands which are completely cruelty free. Lush have a range of great smelling perfumes and they mark which are vegetarian and vegan.

My fave perfume brand however are Eden Perfumes. They are based in Brighton and are completely vegan and cruelty free, they analyse popular brands and make vegan versions for a great price! I couldn’t put it better myself so I have taken the following from their website to show you.

I received the similar to Lady Million by Paco Rabanne for my birthday and I have just bought the similar to Classique by Jean Paul Gautier. They have a nice big spray so you need a couple of spritz to be smelling delightful! My only criticism would be that they only do one size, I think a larger bottle would be good especially if you are buying it as a present for someone else.

Lentern Learnings

As we’re nearing Easter I wanted to take a moment to reflect on Lent and what I’ve learnt through the season. I only started going back to church regularly when my Dad became sick. In my younger years I was quite devout – I studied Religious Studies for A-level and was the President of my university’s Catholic Society for a year which saw me heavily involved in church activities and usually speaking at mass every week. As I got older I still held my beliefs but didn’t attend mass regularly usually due to logistics and laziness. Since I have started going back I have really enjoyed the services and the time they give me to stop and reflect. I have also enjoyed sharing the experience with others when I have attended services with family and friends.

For Lent I decided to give up coffee. I don’t drink it daily but it is a treat a couple of times of week to go into a coffee shop and get a latte. I managed really well with lentern promise the only coffee I have had was after church on my birthday at the coffee morning with my grandparents. When I have gone to a coffee shop when my husband has wanted something I have usually just had nothing at all and I haven’t felt like I was missing out.

I also decided to try and reduce my sugar during Lent. This worked well for the first few weeks. Even when I went out for meals I wasn’t tempted to have dessert. I did let myself off for my birthday but even then I didn’t go mad I just had some cake. The real issue I had was when I came down with a bad cold, I had a temperature and was feeling very sorry for myself! I had a stock in the cupboard as I had been saving up treats people had bought me for my birthday to have at Easter. and just went a bit mad! After that I found it hard to get back on the wagon, but I have learnt I can easily go without sugar and I don’t automatically need something sweet to end a meal. I was having a cup of tea after my dinner and I really looked forward to having it every evening!

My last lentern promise was to fast for a day, usually Thursday or Friday and go to mass rather than having lunch. I hadn’t done this since I was at university and was a bit apprehensive about how this would affect me at work. I would have an early dinner the night before and fast for 24 hours having a late dinner. Some weeks this was easier than others. I tried not to concentrate on food and sipped on hot water throughout the day. I also tried to not talk (or complain!) about it too much. I found going to church helped me focus on why I was doing it. I also enjoyed going to church at lunchtime and it was good on the weeks I was unable to attend mass on Sunday. There is only one Catholic church in the borough my office is in and luckily it is inn walking distance of my workplace. When my company has been in different offices I have wanted to attend lunchtime mass but it was just a bit too far to get to and from in my lunch hour. I will definitely continue to go to lunchtime mass when I am unable to attend on Sundays and I’m glad I have another option for services.

Looking forward to Easter I am looking forward to spending time with family. We are heading down to my in-laws today to spend the weekend with them, my Sister-in-law and Brother-in-law and our nieces and on Monday we are going to my Aunt’s to spend some time with my Dad’s side of the family.

I got a white chocolate egg and mint crisps from Sainsburys from my husband. I was searching out the Choices caramel egg but I must have been too late as I couldn’t find it in Sainsburys or two Holland and Barrett stores I looked in!

My Mum got me some bits from Bomb Cosmetics. I hadn’t heard of this company before but will definitely checking them out in future. She got my a pack of soap chunks and I’m looking forward to trying out all the different kinds. Think I’m gonna need a new soap dish! They clear state their credentials on the pack stating “At Bomb Cosmetics, we make sure we use recycled packaging wherever possible. None of our products are tested on animals and we operate a fixed cut off date in line with leading animal rights organisations guidelines.”

She also got me this gorgeous set of bath bombs. Which I am gonna start as soon as I finish writing this blog! They are chocolate themed and look (and smell!) so gorgeous and tempting I have to remind myself they are actually bath bombs!

Vegan Kind Beauty Box 6

picq-1455135393654

I was really excited to come home last night and find my Vegan Kind Beauty Box had arrived. It’s so nice to open a surprise box of treats every 3 months!

Starting with the bottom right we have Amie Morning Clear Purifying Facial Wash (RRP £4.95). I haven’t heard of this brand before but I’ve just run out of cleanser so this has come just in time! I tried this this morning and it’s really lovely and creamy and smells great! It left my skin feeling really soft.

Above that we have Barry M Radiant Rod Highlighter (RRP £3.99). I don’t usually use a highlighter but as it’s so cold at the moment I could probably do with looking a bit sun-kissed! You can use this on your cheek bones, as an eye shadow and even to exstensuate your cupid’s bow! I also love Barry M’s website as they clearly mark all their vegan products. Makes life so much easier!

On the bottom left we have a lipstick from Saturated Colour. This is another brand I hadn’t heard of before. I don’t often wear lipstick but when I do I go all out so I was glad to receive this bright lipstick called “First Kiss”. It feels really nice going onto your lips and they recommend using a lip brush to get the richest colour.

Lastly on the top left we have incense with a holder from Sacred Elephant Incense. I haven’t burned incense in a long time but I’m looking forward to trying this out. The incense I received was sandalwood and smelt great just through packet! If you saw my last post on Positive Thinking I spoke about breathing techniques and I think this’ll definitely get me in the mood for some meditation!

As always a donation from every box is made to the Dr Hadwen Trust which funds animal free testing research.

Have you tried any of these products before? Let me know what you think.

It’s not a diet it’s a lifestyle

When people hear or talk about veganism they usually first and sometimes only think about what people eat. This is a very big part of veganism but not all of it.  Being vegan influences many of your choices that affect your life.

People also usually remember that vegans avoid leather, but we don’t use any animal products in our clothing so this includes wool and silk. Many argue that sheep need to be shorn, but this is due to them being selectively bred to carry more wool for our own ends. They risk infection from cuts they receive during the process and if you’ve ever seen film of them being shorn they don’t look like they’re enjoying it! Some people don’t have much sympathy for insects but boiling silk worms alive so you can use their thread used to make their cocoons without it being damaged does seem a bit extreme when there are so many cruelty free alternatives.

Another big thing that vegans avoid is animal testing. I don’t think many people are in favour of animal testing for cosmetics. Some may be surprised that it still goes at all as it seems so outdated. In the EU are law was passed in the last couple of years stating companies couldn’t test products on animals, however if your favourite brand also sells in China their government insist on animal testing in the name of consumer safety.

Many brands are anti animal testing and fund research into alternatives. My favourite is Lush. They aren’t just cruelty free but try to reduce packaging and use as few chemicals as possible. They recycle bottle lids that aren’t usually able to be recycled by councils and they reuse pots you return and you even get a free face mask when you return 5. (Then you only need 4 more to get another one as the mask comes in a pot!) I also really like the enthusiasm of their staff. Some people (like my Mum!) hate shopping and find their approach a bit too much and has told a startled sales assistant on more than one occasion! But I find it refreshing when you have so many disinterested sales assistants in shops nowadays. Cruelty free cosmetics and toiletries don’t have to be expensive either, Tesco, Sainsburys, Marks and Spencer and Superdrug own brand items are cruelty free. You’ll have to check the label to make sure they don’t contain animal ingredients but Superdrug clearly mark if products are vegan.

Another issue vegans face is parent companies. It’s up to your own morality what you do but some cruelty free brands are owned by parent companies who are known to test. For example The Body Shop is owned by L’Oréal. A few years ago there was outrage in the vegan community when cruelty free brand Urban Decay announced they were going to enter the Chinese market. Due to the backlash they reversed this decision and vegans applauded. However for some this was short lived as soon after the debacle they too were bought out by L’Oréal. They are two arguments, firstly that you don’t want to support animal cruelty in any form so you won’t buy from a company owned by a shady parent one. Alternatively you may think if the parent company see the success of cruelty free products and brands they will expand their offering and reduce their non-cruelty free items. When we look at food, Alpro who have a massive share of the dairy free market is owned by an American dairy company and fave ice cream brand Swedish Glace is owned by Unilever. None of us shop in exclusively vegan shops no matter how much we would like to, so perhaps boycotting certain brands is not the answer. I do try my best to buy from ethical companies but sometimes there isn’t alwats an easy or convenient alternative.

I’d like to hear your thoughts in the comment section. I also plan on doing a post regarding cleaning products but I’ll save that one for later.

This post has been a bit word heavy so here’s me feeling a bit pampered after the hectic week!

Extra Vegan Beauty Box!

My dear friend ordered me a vegan kind (website) beauty box instead of flowers on the passing of my Dad as, ever the pragmatist, she said they’ll only die anyway!

When the box arrived I was worried it would be the same as my November box (see post) but it was the same as a box I received last year, which I didn’t mind as I’ve used up all those items!

20151218_094745

Firstly we have Hedgerow Herbals Bath Bags. I got the lavender ones. These are fab to throw in the bath and I feel like I’m in a big cup of tea!

20151218_094827

Another one I use in the bath is Premae Skincare Mild Dermabrasion Face & Body Scrub. This is great for clearing out your pores and making you feel really fresh.

20151218_094805

This White Rabbit Skincare Comfort Clenching Balm comes with a lovely flannel. I wasn’t too sure about this one at first as the smell of eucalyptus oil made me feel like I was using Vicks  vaporub on my face! I got over it quickly and enjoyed using it daily as a cleanser.

20151218_094811

This must be the product I used the quickest the last time I had it. Olivia Soaps and Balms Chocolate and Coconut Body Butter. This smells so delicious you have to be careful not to eat it! I like it when the air’s a bit warmer and it’s really soft. But be careful when you open in the height of summer as it can turn to a liquid.

20151218_094817

Lastly these fab Fresh Therapies Nourishing Natural Nail Polish Remover Wipes. Handy to carry around and have in your hand luggage on holiday without the harshness of some of the chemical based ones.

Hope you enjoyed these beauty treats and maybe you’ll try some out for yourself.

Extra Vegan Beauty Box!

Vegan Kind Beauty Box 5

As I mentioned in my last post I subscribe to the Vegan Kind’s quarterly beauty box to discover new vegan products. It’s cost £18 including posting and packaging, but what you get inside is worth much more!

20151118_083844-1

20151118_083826

You get a leaflet telling you about all the products and giving you the companies details.

First of all we have Cocoyou coconut oil. I recently re-stocked my kitchen cupboard but I do like to keep a separate jar in the bathroom. If you haven’t heard about the benefits of coconut oil Google it now! Always make sure you get virgin coconut oil not the processed stuff!

20151118_083920

Next we have Human Kind Hand, Elbow and foot cream. it’s a lovely size for your handbag and smells great20151118_083953

We also have Green People’s intensive repair shampoo. My hair is in quite good condition so I might gift this one as I sometimes do when I think a product can have a better home.

20151118_083944

We have a beautifully soft eye shadow brush next. I have quite a few brushes but it’s always great to have more. I go away quite a lot so may start stocking a second makeup bag.

20151118_083933

I really love the next item – a gorgeous sweet orangey smelling lip gloss. Sometimes lip gloss annoys me if I get my hair stuck on it but think I’ll definitely use this when I’m sporting an up do.

20151118_084007

Lastly we have this mirror. I have anext Alice in Wonderland mirror but both sides have become unstuck and need super-gluing. Or I might just replace it with this one!
