Vegan Delice @ Westfield Stratford

I have loved Vegan Delice and its owner Chanel since I first tasted her delights at Hackney Downs market. Now Chanel and her team have a month long pop-up in the Great Eastern Market at Westfield Stratford City (the John Lewis end).

As Stratford is on the way home from work I had to go and pick up some treats on their first day trading there.

I picked up a brookie for my Husband as he loves anything chocolatey and this didn’t disappoint.

I bought a couple of Viennese whirls for my friend Maxine as she has bought some in the past to then have them munched by her son before she could get a look in! Maxine is away at the moment so I’ve put them in the freezer, hopefully they’ll be ok! (If not I’m sure she can get down there herself in the next month).

Chanel gifted me a red velvet Viennese whirl type thing which was really tasty and I had to take a break half way through, it was so big!

Lastly we picked up some baklava. I have always love baklava but as it traditionally contains honey I’m always pleased when I see a vegan version. Chanel’s take is perfectly sticky and syrupy and I’ll more than likely be popping back for some more before their month at Westfield is up!

Hackney Downs Vegan Market July 2018

My friend Karen and her 6 year old son came up to visit me from Bournemouth so we decided to spend the day in East London.

Our first stop was The Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. If you haven’t been before I would definitely recommend it. They have toys from different eras and different countries and it will take you a trip down memory lane. There are also lots of interactive exhibits to keep youngsters entertained too. Like all the museums in London it is free to enter.

We then headed to Hackney Downs, we passed Love Shack just by Cambridge Heath station. I have been following their Instagram for a while and can’t wait to go there, it’s a chilled out space with hammocks, Miami vibes and of course vegan food!

We walked through the Downs to get to the vegan market which was lively but gladly none of the stalls had long queues. I opted for a herby seitan and mac wrap from Café So Vegan. The portion of seitan was very generous and the creamy mac and cheese was a great addition without it being too messy!

I had recently heard about Dope Soft Serve so on a day like Saturday with temperatures reaching 30°C ice cream was definitely needed! I chose the cinnamon crunch which came with cinnamon cereal flakes popcorn and miso caramel. The ice cream is actually quite thick for soft serve and very creamy.

I couldn’t go to Hackney Downs without picking up some cakes to take home from Vegan Delice. I got this gooey chocolate peanut delight for Husband which he really enjoyed.

And I had this brownie topped with a Baileys Almande cream. The Baileys flavour really came through, I was lucky to get one of the last ones!

I also stopped by Temple Goods to get an iced latte and I picked up a couple of croissants for breakfast as finding vegan croissants is so difficult!

I always enjoy my visits to Hackney Downs Vegan Market and my friends enjoyed it too!

Well it’s been over a month since I last posted. It sometimes seems like I have loads of events all at once and then none for a little while and I don’t like to post just for the sake of it!

When I was out with my friend Maxine a couple of weeks ago she mentioned she was heading to this month’s Vegan Nights and as I free and hadn’t been in a few months I decided to tag along.

The event takes place in 93 Feet East and The Boilerhouse in Brick Lane and takes up a much larger space than the last time I visited. This was great as it meant stalls weren’t cramped together and there was a lot more space for seating.

We decided to go early, which was great to beat the queues and meant I wasn’t out too late! (I do love to be in bed by 10!)

I decided to go have tofish and chips with mushy peas from Shakey Shakey Fish Bar. I’d heard of these guys but never been to an event they were at so wanted to try them out. The tofish was great, the batter was crisp and there was more seaweed than I’ve had in other tofish dishes, which gave it that fishy taste. I also really enjoyed dipping my chips in the tartare sauce.

They also had deep fried Oreos which I was really tempted by, but they’ll have to wait for next time!

Maxine went for a wrap from What the Pitta, I have tried these multiple times and they are always amazing!

For dessert I couldn’t resist this mint chocolate ice cream from Hell Yum. Mint choc chip was always my favourite ice cream flavour pre-vegan and it’s one you rarely see vegan versions of. We also tried some samples of Hell Yum’s cookies which were delicious. They also do ice cream cookie sandwiches but I was far too full for that!

There’s always two cake stalls I have to purchase something from. I picked up a Viennese Whirl from Vegan Delice and a rainbow cake along with a couple of brownies (peanut and caramel) for my Husband from Vida Bakery. These went down a right treat!

I managed to make one none food purchase as well. This gorgeous T-shirt from BCLVA (I couldn’t find a link for them, sorry!) for only a fiver! Maxine picked up a couple of different designs too. I think it’s gonna look great at activism events!

We also had a little boogie to DJ Deccy Jarrett in the bar area before I decided to head home.

There were so many other places to try out, I think I’ll definitely have to back next month!

Hackney Downs Festive Vegan Market

This weekend Hackney Downs Studios hosted Fat Gay Vegan’s three day Christmas Vegan Market extravaganza so we certainly couldn’t miss out.

My Sister-in-law Gemma decided to drive so we missed the pushing and shoving on the bus, tube and Overground and parked near the downs.

We started off with a mulled wine to warm us up. I’m more of a mulled cider person but this went down in a treat in my travel cup.

We were hungry so we quickly headed over to Temple of Seitan. They had two Christmas subs on, I went for the beef wellington with bacon, mushroom duxelles and mustard and Gemma had the chicken with stuffing, cranberry sauce and crispy onions. Both were delicious and the hot English mustard really cleared my sinuses!

After that we needed something sweet and I had been looking forward to having Vegan Delice’s fresh hot doughnuts. We went with one lot with chocolate and nuts and the other with raspberry sauce and both were fabulous!

I also bought my Husband an Oreo cupcake and I enjoyed this gingerbread person with a cup of tea later at home.

I’m already a convert to bamboo toothbrushes but Gem had to pick some up for her and my Brother. This enterprise started as a uni project and is now a full blown ethical business that plants a tree for each toothbrush sold.

She also picked up some make up as a present and was gifted a little extra too! I won’t show the items in case the receipient sees this!

Viva La Vegan were selling Eden Perfume on their behalf so I brought my empty bottle to get a refill (and a discount!), I went for 78 which is similar to Paco Rabanne’s Lady Million.

I also picked up a candle from Vegan Bunny. I had seen these as Gemma had got some for her birthday in October. I love rose scents so I had to go for the rose blossom variety, I also loved the jasmine scent which I might go for next time.

I also grabbed one of Fat Gay Vegan’s tote bags which I love as the text can be read up-side-down as well. I also caught up with the man himself and congratulated him on his recent appearance on the Chickpeeps podcast which I would recommend you listen to straight away!

We finished up with some cheese fries from Club Mexicana. These are gooey and crunchy but don’t leave you feeling heavy and greasy like dairy cheese does.

We had a fab time and it was lovely speaking to all the vendors and being introduced to some new ones.

Hackney Downs Festive Vegan Market

Vegan Nights at The Truman Brewery

This week I was lucky enough to attend the first Vegan Nights market at The Boiler House, Truman Brewery in Brick Lane.

I had looked up which traders were going to be there and planned which food I definitely wanted to eat!

I started off with the Father Jack burger from Biff’s Jack Shack. It had a jackfruit burger with onion rings, smoked cheese and bourbon barbecue sauce, the container even had a sticker with Father Jack (from Father Ted) on it! This burger was so tasty and I’ll definitely be seeking out Biff’s Jack Shack again!

Next on my hit list were Pomodoro e Basilico where I grabbed a slice of Cisa pizza which came with pesto and chorizo. I’ve tried this before and it was definitely as good as I remember!

Next I was ready to move on to the sweet stuff and when I saw the Freakshakes Mylkman were producing I knew I had to try one! I went for the Top banana which consisted of frozen banana, peanut butter and loads of goodies on top all served in a hollowed out pineapple!

I had strict instructions to bring home a treat for Husband so I headed over to Vida Bakery’s stall. I went for this peanut and chocolate for him which I knew wouldn’t disappoint.

Taking a break from the food I headed over to the Bright Zine stall. I had already read their first zine so I was looking forward to picking up the next couple of issues, I also got this great stickers!

The stall I was most interesting in visiting weren’t there when I first turned up and I was worried they might have had to cancel but I had no need to worry as I soon saw Vegan Delice bringing in their wares. I first tried their cakes when I visited Hackney Downs Vegan Market which I wrote about here. This time I was after their hot donuts which they didn’t have at Hackney and I wasn’t disappointed! It’s been a long time since I’ve had a donut like this and it was very tasty!

There were so many people there and I was lucky to get there as early as I did. When I left I saw the queue to get in which had well over 100 people in it and they were operating a one out, one in policy! I hope this becomes a regular event as there is definitely the demand for it!
