Today’s prompt – The Anti-vegan
“But what about bacon?!”
Every vegan will have heard this, usually fairly early in their vegan journey and from friends and family.
I never liked bacon before I was vegan so this wasn’t a issue for me although I am quite fond of “bacon flavoured” things. I think it’s the smokey kind of flavour I like.
I bought Baconish for my Husband to help him transition to vegan.
I have made a couple of the bacon types, like tofu and tempeh which I have featured on the blog previously, but this week I wanted to try a couple of the vegetable based bacons so I went for the aubergine and the carrot.
The aubergine bacon is a rather long process, requiring salting, marinating and then cooking in the oven low and slow. The results are very good though! The flavour is very smokey and strong, the texture could have been crispier as some of the slice were quite chewy and reminded me of dried apple slices.
The carrot bacon is a lot quicker with just slicing and sprinkling the flavour ingredients over the top and baking for 20 minutes. The first time I did this I used a vegetable peeler to slice the carrot which was too thin and it ended up burning.
My second attempt was much better and I loved the flavour from the smoke paprika. I think this would work great on a salad.
What dishes have you made to convince the non-vegans in your life that vegan food is more than lettuce? Let me know in the comments below.
